The Week's Issue

The long term of office (10 years) of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has left a lot of people fearing that the courts are becoming her rubber stamps. By the end of her term on 2010, her administration would have filled so many benches in the lower courts and an overwhelming majority of the justices in the Supreme Court. In fairness, the Supreme Court of the Philippines has made plenty of rulings against her government.

Still, the opposition cannot help but feel uneasy, especially that she is being heavily suspected of planning to extend her term through the courts or acts of congress.
